According to a report from the Project "Reducing Ocean Plastic Waste in
Vietnam" of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Vietnam, the scale of the online retail
market in 2023 is estimated at about 17.3 billion USD, with 1.84 billion packages and
parcels of e-commerce goods transported - accounting for about 75% of postal volume
in 2023. Package and parcel revenue for e-commerce accounts for about 60% of total
postal service revenue. It is estimated that in 2023, e-commerce in Vietnam will use
332 thousand tons of packaging, of which plastic packaging accounts for 171 thousand
tons. The scale of packaging with plastic materials and tools is very high. Its main
reason is that it is very cheap and light, so it saves delivery costs compared to
cardboard boxes. Therefore with a growth rate of over 25% per year, the amount of
plastic waste from e-commerce could reach 800 thousand tons by 2030.
The situation of packaging and bags used by merchants:
+ Cardboard boxes and plastic bags are the most commonly used packaging
materials by merchants for orders when conducting business on online platforms.
Particularly in the "clothing, fashion, and accessories" sector, up to 90% of merchants
use this type of packaging for their shipments.
+ The majority of merchants (65%) use foam or bubble wrap to cushion their
products, while 80% regularly use plastic tape.
