SECTION I: MOLECULAR GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIOCHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY 145not reported in Chinese black pepper essential oil but found in Bangladesh, India and Vietnam ones, in which Vietnamese black pepper oil from Dak Lak province contains caryophyllene as the most abundant components, which is agreement with a common range of 10.0 - 45.7% reported in the literature [2, 6, 7, 16, 23]. Caryophyllene is a type of monocyclic sesquiterpene and a potential bioactive substance, which plays an important role in the flavoring, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and health care industries [15]. A recent review reported about caryophyllene%u2019s anti-cancer and analgesic properties [26]. This result reveals that Dak Lak black pepper in Vietnam is an abundant source of Caryophyllene for many useful and valuable applications. This confirms that Vietnam black pepper has been still ranked at the top of high quality of essential oil producers in the world.5. CONCLUSIONSEssential oil extraction from the Dak Lak%u2019s black pepper using hydro-distillation was successfully optimized. Results revealed that the maximal oil yield of 2.18% was recovered from the Dak Lak%u2019s black pepper under the optimal conditions: dry materials, material to water ratio of 1/10 (100 g/L), material size of 0.5 mm, and distillation time of 240 min. The harvested essential oil was quantitatively analyzed by GC-MS, yielding 16 bioactive compounds identified including Caryophyllene with the highest percentage of 26.47%, followed by 3-Carene of 17.31%, D-limonene of 18.7% and %u03b2-pinene of 9.97%. In conclusion, black pepper in Dak Lak province of Vietnam provides abundant essential oil yield in term of quality and quantity.Acknowledgments: The authors gratefully acknowledge the support of Hanoi University of Industry, Vietnam.
