SECTION I: MOLECULAR GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIOCHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY 25on the basis of cellular conversion of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) into a soluble formazan product using the Promega Cell Titer 96 Aqueous nonradioactive cell proliferation assay. Rifampin (RMP) was included as a control.3. RESULTS3.1. Brief information on ECUM library For this study, we initially established a geographically diverse collection of actinomycete strains. Each actinomycete strain was then cultured in three different liquid media and extracted with three different solvents, generating a total of nine different natural product extracts. Currently, ECUM library contains 22,301 strains of actinomycetes, 1,173 strains of lactic acid bacteria strains, 210 strains of marine actinomycetes, 1,149 strains of marine bacteria, and 762 strains of fungi (Fig 1). Additionally, 200,709 crude extracts of actinomycetes are available in a 96-well plate format for immediate use.
