65% of Vietnamese consumers stated that they are willing to pay more for eco-friendly
products. This shift has encouraged companies to invest in more sustainable
technologies and products.
Using Eco-Friendly Packaging: The use of paper bags and recycled materials in
online shopping is on the rise. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and
Environment, if every consumer reduces their use of plastic bags by just one per week,
approximately 1 million plastic bags could be eliminated each year. This illustrates that
changes in consumer habits not only contribute to environmental protection but also
positively impact the e-commerce market.
4.3. Government Policies and Support
The Vietnamese government is actively issuing policies to promote sustainable e-
commerce. Decree 08/2022/ND-CP on plastic waste management clearly outlines the
responsibilities of companies to reduce plastic packaging use. According to the National
E-commerce Development Plan for the 2026-2030 period, the goal is to cut plastic
packaging use by 50% by 2025.
Support Programs for Businesses: Various ministries, such as the Ministry of
Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Information and Communications, and the Ministry
of Natural Resources and Environment, are collaborating to establish programs
supporting businesses in transitioning to sustainable e-commerce models. This program
includes training on green technology and encouraging investment in research and
development of eco-friendly products.
Encouraging Innovation: The government is also encouraging businesses to
innovate through preferential tax policies and financial support. Startups in green
technology and sustainable product development are receiving particular attention from
investment funds and financial institutions.
5. Recommendations
However, achieving sustainable e-commerce development is not easy and requires
the simultaneous implementation of several measures, such as:
Companies need to officially report on packaging and plastic materials used in e-
commerce to assess the impact of e-commerce on the environment and devise waste
management strategies.
Increase awareness and dissemination regarding the negative impacts of plastic
waste on online consumers through images and videos to change consumer behavior.
Raise awareness of environmental policies and laws among businesses and
consumers to ensure that they are well-informed about legal requirements.
Encourage consumers to participate in green e-commerce and enhance consumer
power. Additionally, consumers should think carefully before purchasing and limit the
demand for rapid delivery (except in special cases) and returning products.
Advocate and advise merchants and businesses providing e-commerce platforms
and logistics services to take concrete actions to reduce plastic waste, enhancing social
responsibility awareness by linking environmental protection with business reputation
and attracting discerning consumers.
