Sustainable e-commerce is not just a trend but a necessary requirement to reduce
plastic waste. Merchants need to seek alternative solutions to plastic packaging, such as
using biodegradable or recyclable packaging, to minimize negative environmental
impacts. This not only helps protect ecosystems but also creates long-term economic
value and promotes a green economy.
Furthermore, to develop sustainable e-commerce, government agencies must pay
attention to establishing policies that support and assist merchants in developing
e-commerce. There is also a need for regulations to address merchants who abuse non-
biodegradable and non-recyclable plastic and carton packaging in their products,
thereby promoting the sustainable development of e-commerce and contributing to the
growth of a green economy.
Implementing sustainable practices in e-commerce not only helps reduce plastic
waste but also raises consumer awareness of environmental responsibilities. This shift
can create a new business model where companies leverage technology to develop
environmentally friendly products and services, thus improving brand image and
gaining a competitive advantage in an increasingly sustainability-focused market.
4. The Impact of Sustainable E-commerce on the Green Economy
In the development of e-commerce in Vietnam, alongside the benefits for
economic growth, it has also generated considerable waste affecting the environment
and ecosystems. This raises the issue of the need to develop sustainable e-commerce to
serve the goals of green economic growth and the commitment to achieve net-zero
emissions at the COP 26 conference.
In promoting the green economy in Vietnam, the development of sustainable e-
commerce has fundamental impacts, such as:
4.1. Environmental Impact
Reducing Plastic Waste: According to the report from the Ministry of Natural
Resources and Environment, Vietnam produced approximately 1.8 million tons of
plastic waste in 2020, a significant portion of which comes from e-commerce packaging.
Implementing solutions such as using eco-friendly packaging, including biodegradable
and recyclable materials, can help mitigate this waste.
Companies like Tiki have started using packaging made from recycled paper for
their products, reducing plastic waste by up to 30% compared to conventional products.
Transitioning to recycled packaging not only minimizes pollution but also helps
businesses save production costs in the long term.
Optimizing Delivery Processes: Optimizing delivery routes can significantly
reduce carbon emissions. A study by the International Transport Forum indicates that
delivery optimization can reduce CO2 emissions from transportation activities by up to
15%. Companies like Shopee have utilized GPS technology to plan more efficient
deliveries, thus minimizing environmental pollution.
4.2. Consumer Behavior
Shifts in Awareness: Changes in consumer behavior also play a crucial role in
developing sustainable e-commerce. According to a Nielsen survey in 2022, about
