adaptive learning settings that would respond to the needs and preferences of individual
learners. Although the idea of AI-assisted language learning has gained enough attention,
empirical research investigating the ways such technologies could be successfully
implemented in ESL classrooms, especially in universities, is yet to be carried out.
Theoretical discussions or small-scale experiments have been undertaken in many past
studies, and there is a gap in the literature on the practical implementation of AI tools on
the improvement of particular language skills, including vocabulary and pronunciation.
Moreover, it needs additional research to address what the AI-based learning tool can do
to engage and motivate learners. Thus, the given research will analyze the efficiency of
the AI-based language learning technologies to improve vocabulary acquisition and
pronunciation development in ESL learners at the university level. Applying a mixed
method research design, which integrates both quantitative data collections presented in
pre-tests and post-tests and qualitative information in the form of student feedback and
classroom observations, this research will aim to deliver a holistic insight into the role of
AI technologies in the process of language learning in higher education. It is hoped that
the results of this work will add to the existing knowledge on the topic of AI-assisted
language learning and offer valuable practical suggestions to educators, researchers and
policymakers willing to implement the use of advanced technologies in the field of
language learning. Finally, the paper also emphasizes the transformative quality of AI in
changing the future of language learning in the context of the fast-changing digital
economy.
2. Literature review
2.1. Artificial intelligence in language education
It has revolutionized the teaching and learning processes in recent years because of
the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the educational field. The use of AI
technologies to assist personalized learning, automate assessment, and give intelligent
feedback to learners is gaining more and more popularity. Across the domain of language
education, AI-enabled applications including intelligent tutoring systems, speech
recognition software, and natural language processing tools have emerged as the source
of new opportunities in improving the process of language acquisition (Luckin et al., 2016).
These technologies enable learners to get to interactive learning processes which
accommodate their personal learning requirements, thereby enhancing the learning
effectiveness and results. Educational systems based on AI could scan the achievements
of learners and reveal the areas of their weak points and offer them the individualized
learning content based on them. At the same time, Holmes, Bialik, and Fadel (2019) state
that AI can transform education, enabling it to be adaptive, providing individualized
training and constant feedback. The AI technologies can be applied to language learning
processes as they allow students to train language-related skills independently and
provide them with instant feedback on the performance. This aspect is more
advantageous in ESL students who need a lot of practice to gain competence in
vocabulary and pronunciation. Also, the fast development of digital technologies has
enhanced the necessity of new language learning solutions. English language proficiency
has gained significance due to globalization and the digital economy and the new
communication requirements. Learning platforms assisted by the AI allow meeting this
demand by offering scalable and flexible learning to learners around the globe (Zawacki-
Richter et al., 2019). Consequently, AI has become an indispensable part of contemporary
language education.
