Abstract: In the context of the global economy facing many difficulties with slowing growth in
many regions and countries, the ASEAN region has emerged as a bright spot in terms of economic
growth. ASEAN is one of the fastest-growing, youngest, and most dynamic economic regions, with a
projected growth rate of 4.7% in 2024. Recently, the trend of using clean energy, reducing the use of
fossil fuels, promoting green economic growth and sustainable development has attracted the attention
of many countries around the world, including countries in the ASEAN region. This trend enhances the
development potential of the region, strengthens cooperation, and facilitates the sharing of experiences
and technologies between countries inside and outside the region. It contributes to balancing economic
growth with environmental protection. The article focuses on analyzing the growth trend of the green
economy in the ASEAN region, especially in the context of the global economic slowdown and the
increasingly urgent need for sustainable development. The main goal is to clarify how ASEAN countries
can balance economic growth and environmental protection through the promotion of clean energy and
green technology. The study uses qualitative methods based on data from international organizations
and ASEAN governments. From there, the article makes recommendations such as: strengthening
policies to support clean energy, promoting regional cooperation, developing human resources, and
encouraging technological innovation, in order to promote green economic growth and sustainable
development.

1. Introduction
The concept of the green economy was first introduced by British environmental
economists in 1989 and was officially used at the United Nations Conference on
Sustainable Development in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil [1].
To support economic development and urbanization, ASEAN countries have
increased the exploitation of natural resources. However, the use and exploitation of
these resources is not always optimized. In addition, outdated technologies in industrial
production and supporting industries, along with the discharge of untreated waste into
the environment, have exacerbated global warming, sea level rise, and ozone depletion.
Climate change, sea level rise and salinity have caused serious impacts on the ASEAN
region. These factors have posed environmental problems that affect the lives of people
in ASEAN countries. This research paper stems from the urgent need of the ASEAN
region to find a sustainable development model to deal with increasingly serious
environmental challenges such as climate change, sea level rise and environmental
pollution due to resource extraction and outdated industrial production. Green economic
